Why is my Shopify product not indexed by Google?

Updated

Most Shopify products take 2-4 weeks to index naturally. If your product is older than that, check for: (1) noindex tag in theme settings, (2) password-protected store, (3) duplicate canonical URL pointing to a variant, (4) blocked in robots.txt, or (5) thin content (Google won't index pages with under 100 words of unique text). Direct submission via Google Search Console + Indexing API can force indexation within 24-48h.

Quick diagnostic checklist

Step 1 — Confirm the product URL is reachable. Open it in an incognito window. If it shows a password prompt, your store is in 'password protection' mode (Shopify Admin → Online Store → Preferences) and Google can't crawl it. Disable to allow indexing.

Step 2 — Check robots.txt at https://yourstore.com/robots.txt. Make sure /products/* isn't disallowed. Shopify's default robots allows products; only custom themes or apps occasionally block them.

Step 3 — View source of the product page (right-click → View Page Source). Search for `noindex` — if present in a `<meta name="robots">` tag, your theme is excluding the page. Disable in theme settings or Shopify SEO app.

Step 4 — Check the canonical URL in the page source. Search for `rel="canonical"`. If it points to a different variant of the product (or to the collection page), Google consolidates signals into the canonical and ignores your URL.

Unlike marketplace URLs, you OWN your Shopify domain

Critical difference: Shopify products live on YOUR domain (e.g., yourstore.com or yourstore.myshopify.com). You can submit them directly to Google's Indexing API or Search Console — Etsy / Amazon / Redbubble sellers can't do this.

Process: in Google Search Console, verify your domain, then use 'URL Inspection' tool to submit each product. For bulk submission (>50 URLs), an indexing service with the Standard tier (1 credit per URL) is sufficient — no need for Apex since you own the domain.

Long-term ranking vs short-term indexing

Indexing fast doesn't mean ranking fast. Shopify products typically need 2-3 months of organic signals (links, traffic, conversions) before ranking competitively. Fast indexing buys you the chance to compete; sustained content marketing and external link-building drives actual rankings.
